Is Personal Development a Scam?
Industry Accreditation Urged by Young Author and Speaker

Toronto, Ontario - March 6, 2003 - Twenty-six years old, and internationally recognized, Danish Ahmed, today released his most recent article, Is Personal Development a Scam? In it, Ahmed, author of "A Dictionary of Distinctions" and a practicing personal development speaker and coach, asserts that the personal development industry is maturing and growing in a meteoric fashion and poses the question "What qualifications do individuals really have in helping other people?"

He says, "the concept of personal development is marketed to us in various forms. We've called it professional development. We've called it self-help, self-improvement and peak-performance. We have broadened the term to encompass so much. Now it's the wellness industry that includes vitamins, energy healing, and spiritual enlightenment. When does it end?"

Ahmed's concerns centre around the accreditation or apparent lack of, that some people involved in the industry bring to their many books, videos, cd's and other material which, in some instances, can have life changing effects on the recipient's thoughts and behaviour

Ahmed proposes that it is up to practitioners of the trade to demonstrate to the public that they are truly certified to practice their craft. He takes this concept one step further when he adds, "It is clear that there is no regulatory body in the personal development industry. This is, in fact, very dangerous. Customers can't rely on the quality of products/services they are buying because there are no standards to measure them against."

He asks, "So what can our industry do about this? We can begin to set standards for our profession. We can establish a regulatory body that monitors the activities of those practicing our profession. We can provide training, counsel and certification for the industry."
