Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -- Margaret Mead (1901-1978), Anthropologist and Writer DOWNSVIEW PARK AND CLIMATE PROJECT CANADA TEAM UP TO CELEBRATE EARTH HOUR WITH EVENT TORONTO, March 25, 2008 -- In support of the global phenomenon that is Earth Hour, Downsview Park has teamed up with Climate Project Canada to host an Earth Hour celebration event on March 29th between 7:30 -- 9PM. The event which will take place inside The Hangar at Downsview Park will feature 4 simultaneous 15-minute soccer games played with minimal lighting and with coloured glow-sticks to illuminate players and identify their teams. In addition the main reception area of the Hangar will be feature a series of displays by various groups and organizations that will provide information relating to a number of Green initiatives. There will also be interactive sessions by groups including a drumming circle and a meditation group. Also expected to be in attendance at the event are many of the selected individuals from the GTA who were chosen to participate in the "Inconvenient Truth" training session being run by Climate Project Canada, with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. These delegates will be trained by Mr. Gore to deliver the Inconvenient Truth slideshow presentation on his behalf to Canadians and are among the 200 candidates selected from the thousands who applied. The event is free to attend with residents from across Toronto being encouraged to visit. It is asked however that any attendees ensure their lights are turned off prior to leaving for Downsview Park and that they use the TTC if at all possible. Earth Hour at Downsview Park is sponsored http://www.TorontoEarthHour.org and Hands of Rhythm Corporate Events. While space is limited there are still opportunities for groups to set up information displays. If anyone is interested they should contact one of the names listed below. About Downsview Park: Downsview Park consists of 572 acres of land in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area. Formerly a military base (CFB Dowsview), the site was designated by the Government of Canada to be developed as "a unique urban recreational green space for the enjoyment of future generations." The Park attracts more than a million visits annually and is home to numerous enterprises, including the Toronto Aerospace Museum, the Downsview Park Merchants Market and Farmers Market, GrandPrix Kartways, The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Treble Clef Music School, The HoopDome, The Toronto Wildlife Centre, Area 51 Paintball and The Hangar, which offers indoor soccer and beach volleyball within the larger Downsview Park Sports Centre. Walk into the park entrance and follow John Drury Drive until you reach Carl Hall Road. Turn left at Carl Hall Road and you will see our 35 Carl Hall Road office building on your right side. Instructions: Driving from Keele and Sheppard At the Intersection of Keele Street and Sheppard turn east onto Sheppard Avenue. The first set of lights you encounter will be Sheppard and John Drury Drive - the main entrance to the park. Follow John Drury Drive into the park to the three-way stop. Turn left onto Carl Hall Road. PDP's main offices are in the second building on the right. If you would like to go to the Toronto Aerospace Museum or the Hangar Sports Complex continue along Carl Hall Road across the railroad tracks. The museum is on the right and the Hangar is just a right turn away around the corner from the TAM building. Instructions from Pearson International Airport Take Highway 409 to Highway 401 East and exit at Keele Street. Take Keele Street North to Sheppard Avenue and turn right. The entrance to the park is one block east at John Drury Drive. Follow John Drury Drive into the park to the three-way stop. Turn left onto Carl Hall Road. PDP's main offices are in the second building on the right. If you would like to go to the Toronto Aerospace Museum or the Hangar Sports Complex continue along Carl Hall Road across the railroad tracks. The museum is on the right and the Hangar is just a right turn away around the corner from the TAM building. Instructions from Allen Road From Allen Road/Dufferin Street at Sheppard Avenue turn west onto Sheppard Avenue and proceed to John Drury Drive (the entrance to the park) and turn left into the park. At the 3-way stop turn left onto Carl Hall Road. PDP's main offices are in the second building on the right. If you would like to go to the Toronto Aerospace Museum or the Hangar Sports Complex continue along Carl Hall Road across the railroad tracks.
