Meeting People during the Holiday Season...

At this time of year in various cultures, there are many holiday parties we go to. These are opportunities to connect with people -- those where we may not get to speak with very often, and those where we're meeting for the first time. So how do we relate? How do we keep our conversations engaging? How do we have fun creating our lives?

Listen. When someone is speaking to you, it's an opportunity for you to discover someone else's world. Get out of your own head, and stop that mind chatter. We're talking to ourselves all day long in our own heads. A conversation is a great possibility to get out of that space, and be in someone else's world. It also builds rapport and can lead to future possibilities like a new business or a new friendship.

Acknowledge. Sometimes we'll meet people we haven't chatted with since last year. Their life may have changed in some ways and you may get a condensed update. You don't know exactly what they've been through. Be with who they are today. Acknowledge them for something they've said or done, because you want to. Most people appreciate compliments and it makes them feel cherished.

Express. Meeting with new people is a great opportunity to get perspective about some of the issues in our own lives. We may already have a particular way we speak to those we already know. With those we're meeting for the first time, sometimes it can be easier to be more open, authentic, and straight-forward. Isn't it amazing what a powerful connection we can sometimes feel with a person we've just met?
